Ganga Ram’s grandfather, Lahori Ram, was a regimental follower with the 6th Duke of Connaught’s Own Lancers (now 6 Lancers, Pakistan Army) and died on December 12, 1942, while the regiment was in Iraq as part of the 8th Indian Infantry Division. He’s also commemorated as a war dead at the Delhi and Karachi war cemeteries. But India today refuses to accept that Lahori was a martyr—a strange contradiction of its own stand 60 years ago when it honoured Lahori’s supreme sacrifice.
