BENGALURU: Flipkart owned fashion store Myntra is re-launching its mobile site after eight months, following in the footsteps of its parent site Flipkart that re-started its mobile site earlier this month. At the time of writing this article, users could access select product categories like t-shirts, shirts and sarees among others on Myntra’s mobile site. However, one can purchase the product only through the app. This development was first reported by Medianama. Myntra had earlier shut down its desktop and mobile site to move to an app-only model, kickstarting a major debate among Indian startups on whether they should also ditch websites in favour of mobile apps. This decision was based on the fact that nearly 90% of its traffic and 70% of its business was coming from mobile phones as of April this year, Myntra CTO Shamik Sharma had said during an ETtech meetup in July. “It isn’t about the money but just the realisation that if we don’t build (a mobile-only product), somebody else is going to build it and whoever builds that is going to be the winner,” he said. Flipkart was expected to follow suit but the Bengaluru-based etailer recently seems to have had a change in heart and re-launched its mobile site called Flipkart Lite, that gives users an app-like experience on their mobile browsers. With this new mobile site, Flipkart was aiming to woo more users, although it currently works only on the latest Chrome and Opera mobile browsers. This was perhaps because while native apps give a personalised user experience, they also come with certain limitations. For instance, apps take up more space on a device and in countries like India where phones often have limited space, users tend to uninstall apps that are not frequently used by them.
