If you’d ever need advice on investing, I’d be the wrong person. My mother handles my money. She always has — she’s a Sindhi so she just knows how to invest well (laughs). She never gave my sister (Karisma) and me our money when we were teenagers; she just invested it for us. One of the first things that I bought when I began earning was a gold ring, which I eventually lost. I think at that age, I didn’t value money that much. But I believe as a family we’re quite grounded . That’s because my mother is pretty moderate. Over the years, I’ve never invested in stocks or shares; more in property. I know my money is in bonds, schemes and LIC, but I don’t understand investing. More budget for education The budget should harp more on education and there should be more schools. The crux of the problem here is that people are illiterate. Because of that, there are so many random things happening. People don’t even know who they are voting for. They just say, “Voting ke liye jaana hai.” They’re not informed. There should be more money allocated for education of girls. In villages, it ‘s the boys who are encouraged to study — where is the concept of girls going to school? Women are out there, leading the pack and it’s great. I’ve been working since I was 18. I’m a wife, a career woman, I multi-task – we can have it all because we know how to balance it out. Returns on our taxes I’m hoping for a budget that reduces taxes. I’m more concerned about that than where my tax money is going — just reduce tax (laughs). We’re only giving money; what are we getting in return, in terms of public health insurance or security? The budget should go towards our safety — it’s a concern. More money towards our cops, for cameras in public places, separate buses for women. Why not? In a country like India, we need that. Better infrastructure in Mumbai Gujarat is an amazing example of tax money well spent. I’d like to see Mumbai, the city I live in, to flourish. Good roads, better safety, more sanitation, separate toilets for women. You see men coming out of women’s toilets in public places. All of this matters. I believe there is sound infrastructure in Gujarat. Bengaluru is amazing but why can’t we have the same in Mumbai? Commuting should be made easier. Working & saving I’ve worked out of passion, not to buy houses or cars. My big indulgence, though, is shopping for clothes. And shoes — which woman doesn’t like shoes? One pair isn’t enough; it should be a minimum of 1,000 pairs. Saif (Ali Khan) is like me. He collects shoes and lots of sunglasses. I’m not brand conscious. A pair of shoes could cost 20 pounds and I’d be okay with that, as long as it looks good. I do save but I don’t plan too much ahead. I’ve always been a girl who lives in the moment. I don’t like to worry about where I’ll be ten years from now. I’ll cross that bridge when it comes.”
