NEW DELHI: The Coffee Day Enterprises board met on Wednesday and concluded all statutory formalities, the company CFO told ETNOW. He said the company would soon come out with an action plan. The company has plunged into a crisis after its founder-promoter VG Siddhartha committed suicide, allegedly because of intense pressure from the PE investors of the company and from income-tax officials. The CFO refused to comment on a letter purported to have been written by the Bangalore entrepreneur before taking the drastic step. “I also saw the letter on WhatsApp like everyone else,” ETNOW quoted him as saying. He refused to share more details, saying he is grief-stricken currently. In the letter addressed to the company’s board, Siddhartha suggested he did his best for the company and pointed towards the pressure he faced from a PE investor. The letter also talked of harassment by the DG of income-tax.The Income-Tax Department on Tuesday denied charges of harassment and claimed his signature available with it was different from that on the letter. It said the businessman had admitted to holding stash income after raids were conducted against him and his concerns.Insisting that the department acted as per provisions of the Income-Tax Act, the I-T department in a statement said the department provisionally attached company’s shares to protect the interests of revenue, a norm in cases of large tax evasion. It said the action was based on “credible evidence” gathered in the search action undertaken against the group in 2017.Hours before his disappearance, Siddhartha had called his personal staff at the Cafe Coffee Day headoffice in Bengaluru and asked them to disseminate the letter, which referred to the “tremendous pressure” from lenders and “harassment” from Income-Tax officials. He wrote he was very sorry to let down the people who put their trust in him.The body of Cafe Coffee Day founder V G Siddhartha, who had gone missing from a river bridge near Mangaluru on Monday night, was found by local fishermen in the Nethravathi river on Wednesday morning. His family later confirmed his identity.
