Chennai flood: 14 Canara Bank branches, 270 ATMs not functional

Canara Bank informed the BSE on Saturday that 14 of its bank branches and 270 ATMs were not functional owing to the flood situation in Chennai, Kanchipuram and certain other areas in Tamil Nadu. The currency chest cash movement has also been stopped. Bank systems have been hit due to the floods in Chennai impacting ATM and other branch services. Some lenders have announced one-off measures to provide relief to customers in Chennai. “ICICI Bank will not levy any penalty for its customers in Chennai for delay in EMI and credit card payments for the month of November. It will also waive off charges for cheque bounce in the same period,” said an ICICI Bank spokesperson. HDFC Ltd too has extended assistance to its home loan customers. In a release on Friday the home loan company said customers will not be penalised for delays in EMI payments for the month of November. “HDFC Ltd has also decided to offer quick home improvement Loans. There will be no processing fees on all such loans,” said Renu Sud Karnad, Managing Director, HDFC Ltd. This scheme, however, will be valid only for all loan applications submitted on or before 31 December, 2015. Canara Bank, though not offering any waivers said mobile ATMs from Bangalore are being utilized in the worst affected areas in Chennai. Around 15 of the bank’s branches in Chennai and Kanchipuram will function on Sunday till 2.00 p.m. The bank has also organised for 25 cordless Point Of Sale (POS) machines to be used for cash withdrawal Sunday onwards.
