Chinese smartphone brand Honor, which announced a re-entry into the India market earlier this month, is facing flak over the pricing of its first device, leading to the company having to announce a permanent price cut on the first day of the sale. The smartphone was launched in India at Rs 37,999 but the company advertised a much lower price during the launch, and said it will be available with a Rs 10,000 discount, after combining multiple affordability offers. The offers included bank discounts, additional exchange bonus, and a TWS earbud from the brand. Since the announcement earlier this month, Honor faced faced criticism on social media platforms from potential customers who did not want a TWS earbud. In response, a day before the sale, company head Madhav Sheth, who was the former CEO of Realme India, clarified on ‘X’ (previously called Twitter) that instead of the TWS, Honor will be offering a direct coupon on Amazon worth Rs 5,000 during the first sale on September 18.”Your voice matters! As a customer-centric team, we’ve listened to your feedback and acted on it. For our Honor 90 first sale offer, we’re switching gears! Instead of TWS, we’re giving you direct coupon/discount worth Rs. 5000,” Sheth had said. However, when the phone went on sale at 12PM on September 18, the discount ncoupon wasn’t visible. This prompted Sheth to issue another clarification, stating that it was a technical glitch and the discount is being factored into the list price of the product on the platform.“There is a technical glitch on Amazon platform. While the coupon is getting restored, we have given direct price discount to maintain seamless buying experience,” the brand’s X-handle posted. The frequent clarifications and changes to the pricing of the smartphone has led social media users to question the brand. “Honor 90 Sale misleading by Amazon in first screenshot they said Rs 5000 Coupon discount on 18 September But in second screenshot no Rs 5000 coupon,” a social media post read. The brand acted quickly and announced a straight Rs5000 discount on the listed price.Honor did not respond to ET’s queries.HonorTech had earlier told ET Telecom that it plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore in India to set up operations for the Chinese smartphone brand, and reenter the country through a licensing deal.Sheth had said that while the initial batches of the devices will be imported, Honor will be manufacturing phones locally in India with manufacturers who are part of the government’s production-linked incentive scheme. He added that the company aims to achieve Rs 10,000 crore in revenue and 5% volume market share by December 2024.
