ICICI okays external probe into CEO Kochhar’s alleged wrongdoings

ICICI Bank has now said they will institute an independent probe on an anonymous whistleblower’s charges of quid pro quo by MD, CEO Chanda Kochhar.The whistleblower’s complaint was on CEO Chanda Kochhar’s alleged violation of code of conduct.The bank informed the stock exchanges that at a meeting held on Tuesday, its Board of Directors decided to institute an enquiry, which will be headed by independent person. However, the bank did not disclose the name of the customer or client involved.This comes four days after Sebi issued a show-cause notice to the bank and its CEO for alleged violation of disclosure requirements under securities law in the case involving Videocon Group and NuPower Renewables, a firm run by her husband Deepak Kochhar.In a letter addressed to PM Narendra Modi dated March 15, 2016, ICICI Bank shareholder Arvind Gupta alleged that the bank extended loans to the debtladen Videocon Group despite dubious track record mainly due to business relations between the Dhoots and Deepak Kochhar. The company’s ownership was transferred to Deepak Kochhar as a quid pro quo for loans, Gupta said. The capital markets regulator has observed in the notice that allegations against the bank’s CEO, which are considered major developments, were not disclosed to stock exchanges.
