NEW DELHI: The telecom regulator launched a web portal that will provide network coverage details of all carriers, which will enable consumers to make more informed decisions while selecting their service provider. The portal’s beta version has been launched on Thursday on a pilot basis with data from carriers in Delhi and Madhya Pradesh. This portal – www.coveragemap.trai.gov.in – will be Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai) second such initiative after a portal on tariff comparisons across circles, which is aimed at giving consumers complete information on network coverage and tariffs – two critical elements – that consumers weigh while choosing a carrier.”On this interactive user friendly portal, users shall be able to select various options like location, indoor/ outdoor, TSP, technology (2G/3G/4GVoLTE),voice/data to know the coverage provided by particular carrier at the location of their interest. During the beta release, portal shall permit upto 50 concurrent users. If there are more than 50 users they will get message to access the portal/website after some time,” the regulator said, seeking feedback from stakeholders and consumers to improve the portal. The portal is developed using coverage data provided by different telcos, which will be updated on regular basis. Trai has collaborated with CDoT (Centre for Development of Telematics), government body engaging in cost-effective indigenous total telecom solutions, for implementing this portal. This platform shall not only benefit the consumers but also help other stakeholders to do a comparative analysis, Trai added.
