Dalit groups in Kendrapara, Odisha, are protesting against the declaration by the oldest civic body that only Brahmins’ bodies are entitled to be cremated in a specific crematorium. The crematorium, known as the “Brahmin Shamshan,” has been operating since 1928. Dalit leaders argue that this is a violation of fundamental rights and have written to the govt seeking equal access for all Hindus. Some locals claim that there is an ulterior motive behind raising the issue.
