Rape survivors in Pilibhit district, Uttar Pradesh, are being forced to undergo medical examinations by male doctors due to the absence of female doctors at the district women’s hospital. Out of 79 rape survivors brought to the hospital between June 1 and September 28, 70 declined the examination by a male gynecologist. The situation arose after the retirement of the female medical superintendent and another gynecologist. Legal experts argue that this practice violates the law and the survivor’s right to privacy. The survivors and their families were not informed about the potential impact on their cases if they refused the examination.
